About the Department

The disciplines of the Department of Languages and Literature are traditionally organized into the areas of language and Korean literature. After acquiring basic knowledge of these disciplines, students enrolled in the department will develop analytical, critical, and creative skills in Korean language and literature. Furthermore, students of the Department of Korean Language and Literature will develop a broad knowledge system that encompasses Korean language and writing, literature and culture, and mass media.

In the Department of Korean Language and Literature, students learn and study cultural forms that express our feelings, ideas, and life experiences through Korean language and writing. Korean language and Korean literature are the basic foundation for learning, but the department is also expanding its scope of study to include mass media-related fields such as film and television. In recent years, as global awareness of Korean culture has increased, the field of Korean language education, which is necessary for the global spread of Korean culture, has been included within the scope of the Department of Korean Language and Literature.

Major Course Guide

Year 1 │ Introduction to Literature, Introduction to Linguistics

As a first-year student, you will take Introduction to Literature and Introduction to Linguistics, which make up the foundations of the major. These courses provide students with the opportunity to study the most basic and general aspects of literature and language, the major categories of the Department's curriculum, at a liberal arts level.

Year 2 │ Understanding Dramatic Content

Based on an understanding of the principles of drama, this course examines the production methods and creative environments of dramatic works produced through various media such as television and the internet as well as orthodox theater performances. To this end, students will develop the ability to utilize drama as cultural content through theater, television, web originals, etc.

Year 3 │ Stories and Storytelling

This course analyzes the narrative structures that can be found across cultures, and based on this, explores storytelling methods and strategies in earnest. The stories covered in this course are not only oral traditions such as myths and tales, but also games, dramas, movies, advertisements, and entertainment that are being created in modern times. This course explores storytelling methods and strategies in contemporary culture and studies new and diverse paradigms in Korean culture.

Year 4 │ Literary Therapy

This course examines literary arts from the perspective of literary therapy, and provides training and practice in enjoying and analyzing works of literary art. It integrally examines the theory and methodology of literary therapy, and provides insight into a cross-section of human life through the process of actually recognizing and interpreting works of literature as one's own texts. In Literary Therapy, students actively read and appreciate works of literary art, while actively writing to purify the soul and practice a dynamic process of "self-healing.

Academic Activities

The department's major academic events include academic visits, academic festivals, competitions, career events, and author invitations. As of 2022, the Department of Korean Language and Literature has set 'enhancing employability' as the department's top priority and mid- to long-term development goal, and is seeking a major development strategy. Accordingly, we are planning study groups and programs that specialize in literary research and creation, employment, and start-ups based on student demand. In particular, we are planning student-friendly employment and start-up mentoring and learning community activities through industry-academia collaboration with companies or local communities. We plan to conduct study groups on various topics such as 'video content', 'storytelling', 'reading education', 'children's literary education', 'publishing', and 'Korean language education'.

Student clubs in the Department of Languages and Literature are always open. The Department of Languages and Literature is always open to the formation of new clubs in consultation with students and faculty. Currently, the department's two main clubs are "Novel Reading" and "Enjoyment," where students read, discuss, and critique novels of various genres, as well as engage in literary creation activities.

Various essay tutor certificates, KBS Korean Language Proficiency Test, Test of Korean Language Proficiency (TOKL), Korean Character Proficiency Test, Korean Language Proficiency Test, and students who completed the teaching course while in school can obtain a second-level teaching certificate (Korean language subject), and Korean language teaching certificate after entering graduate school.
